Recognize the symptoms of sinusitis in children and how to treat it

Sinusitis is inflammation of the sinus cavity. Sinusitis can occur at any age, including children. Sinusitis in children can be caused by infection or other conditions outside the infection. To overcome sinusitis in children, appropriate treatment is needed and in accordance with the cause. At a mild stage, the symptoms of sinusitis in children are very similar to the symptoms of the common cold or ARI in children. But if left unchecked, sinusitis in children can get worse, even cause complications.

What are the symptoms of sinusitis in children?

Some conditions can increase the risk of sinusitis in children, including frequent colds, allergies, disorders of the nasal cavity bulkhead (septal deviation), and nasal polyps. Children who have sinusitis will usually show the following symptoms:
  • Nasal congestion for more than 10 days.
  • Coughs and colds that never heal.
  • Greenish or yellowish mucus or snot.
  • Pain in the forehead and cheeks.
  • There is a feeling of mucus swallowed (post nasal drip).
  • Fever.
  • Bad mouth.
  • Fussy and no appetite.
  • Limp and not powered.

Sinusitis Treatment in Children with Independent Care at Home

Some treatments that you can do at home to relieve the symptoms of sinusitis in children are:

1. Increase the consumption of water

To ease complaints and speed up sinusitis recovery, make sure the child's fluid needs are met. If the child drinks enough water, snot will be thinner and easier to remove.

2. Compress warm water

In addition, you can also compress the child's nose area with a warm compress. The use of warm water compresses is intended to relieve pain and help thin the mucus.

3. Use an air humidifier

You can install an air humidifier in your room or in another room that your child often uses. Humid air can help relieve nasal congestion experienced by children due to sinusitis.

4. Get enough rest

Also make sure the child gets enough rest. With enough rest, sinusitis recovery process in children will be faster.

5. Perform nasal rinsing (saline nasal irrigation)

Saline nasal irrigation is the act of spraying salt water or saline fluid into a child's nose, to rinse the nasal cavity. This rinsing is useful to relieve nasal congestion.

Medications for Overcoming Sinusitis in Children

When a child has sinusitis, the doctor will give medicines to overcome it. Some types of drugs that are usually given by doctors are:

1. Decongestants

This drug can help relieve nasal congestion due to a buildup of mucus in the sinus cavity. Decongestants are available in the form of drinking tablets and nasal sprays (nasal decongestants).

2. Antihistamines

If sinusitis in a child is caused by an allergy, the doctor will give the child an antihistamine drug. This drug is useful to reduce the child's body's reaction to allergens.

3. Antibiotics

The doctor will give antibiotics if sinusitis in children is caused by a bacterial infection, or if sinusitis has caused complications in the form of a bacterial infection. Sinusitis can also be treated with surgery, but the choice of treatment depends on the severity, the child's response to the drug, and the choice of parents. You need to recognize and be aware of the symptoms of sinusitis in children. If your child experiences the symptoms above, consult a doctor immediately.
